The Painted Sky In Lima, Peru

This is a journal entry. These posts reflect a feeling or memory that I want to share and hopefully encourage you to experience more of the world. No travel tips or best restaurants here. Just me, my food, and my travels.

The sunsets in Lima will float through my memories forever. The vibrant colors, the crowds along the coast, and watching the earth’s magic unfold.

Lima resembles nothing of the coastal towns elsewhere in Latin America. No lush beaches, no mai tais or pina coladas, and forget anything resembling tropical. Lima’s rocky coastline and high cliffs offer more function than beauty.

The sun stays behind the clouds for days at a time with continuous gray skies and ocean stretching to the horizon.

When the sun peaks through the clouds, especially at dusk, Peruvians from all over the city flock to the coastal cliffs to watch a spectacle I’ve never seen elsewhere.

The sun sets differently in Lima. Clouds and mist along the edge of the ocean help the sun’s rays shine bright, making the ocean glow a vibrant orange. The sea slowly blends into the horizon like watching Bob Ross take his brush and gently blend the lines of the ocean into the sky right before my very eyes.

Looking into the water, I saw surfers floating on the ocean, passing up waves to spend a few moments bathed in the sun’s orange glow.

Yes, beautiful sunsets cover the globe, but in Lima, the whole world bursts alive with color. Despite having busy lives, everyone takes a few moments to bask in the evening rays, feeling the events of the day come to a peaceful close.
