Bellavista: Plenty of Delicious Food Amongst The Parties

Located in the central area of Santiago, the Bellavista neighborhood showcases a bohemian atmosphere and vibrant nightlife with amazing bars, restaurants, and clubs. For hungry travelers wanting to visit this food dense neighborhood, I filtered through some of the best restaurants in Bellavista and walk you through some of my favorite meals.

1. Galindo – Best Traditional Chilean Restaurant In Bellavista

The flashy signs worked! Outside Galindo restaurant laid hand written painted signs highlighting the menu’s featured dishes. Plus the huge multicolored “Bella Vista Bella” makes the restaurant pop amongst the other spots on the corner.

Galindo specializes in classic Chilean food, which few restaurants do well in Bellavista. Despite the party crowds, Galindo stays true to proper traditional flavors.

My wife decided on the Spicy Pork Sausage with a side of spicy mashed potatoes. Casually living up to the names, the sausage and the mashed potatoes gave enough heat to be noticed but stopped short of what I would consider “spicy.” I’d give it a 2 out of 10 on my personal Spice-o-meter scale.

I thought the sausage tasted wonderful with nice chunks of spices and fat clearly seen in the middle. The sausage carried a nice unctuousness that the mashed potatoes mellowed out, with each working extremely well together.

For my dish, I went for the Pastel de Choclo, a mashed corn pie loaded with protein and served in a hot stone bowl.

The Pastel de Choclo both amazed and confused; I have never eaten anything quite like it.  The corn mash itself dazzled with a play on sweet and savory but maintained a delicious complexity.

Under the baked corn laid a treasure trove of protein with chunks of chicken breast and minced beef. As I spooned my way through, I found a whole boiled egg and golden raisins sprinkled throughout. Finally, two whole black olives made an appearance and somehow everything worked. I don’t understand because the flavors shouldn’t work, but they did.

All the meat stayed tender and delicious with a slight pop of sweetness from the raisin and a sour punch from the black olives. I took the leftovers home and they reheated nicely. I imagine the rest of the dishes at Galindo are cooked with the same attention to detail as this.

2. Banchan Nara – Best Restaurant In Bellavista For Classic Korean Cuisine

Korean comfort food at its finest, Banchan Nara celebrates the simple but delicious Korean staples that will satisfy a homesick Korean… like me! These bold and refreshing flavors make Banchan Nara one of the best restaurants in Bellavista, Santiago.

My wife went with her customary Bibimbap in a stone bowl. For those unfamiliar, Bibimbap is a rice bowl filled with a variety of uniquely prepared vegetables, topped with a fried egg, and drizzled with a spicy Korean sauce. The Korean flare comes forward with the stone bowl which crisps the rice so each bite crunches with satisfying pops.

For me, I wanted the Japchae Bap, a noodle dish filled with sautéed veggies and beef paired with white rice. All the right flavors in all the right places.

The Japchae hit strong with sesame oil and soy sauce but that’s why I loved the white rice acting as a neutral starch evening out the flavors. Plus, the carb-on-carb action always satisfies my soul in a very nostalgic way, reminding me of my mother’s heartfelt cooking.

Since hunger really attacked us today, we wanted a third entree to share and tried the Rabokki, a spicy tteokbokki rice cake dish with ramen noodles added for good measure.

Tasted just like the ones I ate in Seoul. The ramen noodles coated in the red sauce made my heart sing with spicy delight as I slurped up the noodles with bites of rice cakes. Carb on carb again! I feel a nap coming.

3. Grosso’s Hotdog – Best Hotdog In Bellavista

Visiting Santiago without trying the wildly beloved hotdogs would be an unforgivable offense. Throughout the city, you will find the word “Completo” written on faded signs of what looks like sandwiches or hot dogs.

Simply put, a Completo is a hotdog served on a bun that’s loaded up with various toppings and sauces. Completo could mean many things depending on the restaurant, but one of the most famous is the Italiano Completo which my wife and I became rabid fans of, eating these continuously throughout our stay in Santiago.

Grosso’s Hotdogs serves up some of the finest Completos in the city, maintaining a prominent location on the south side of Bellavista.

You can try to decipher the menu, but when in doubt just ask for an Italiano Completo and let the cooks do the rest. The Italiano received its esteemed title not with Italian ingredients or flavors, but with the colors, coming topped with diced tomatoes, a generous portion of smashed avocado, and drizzled with Mayonaise, showcasing the colors of the Italian flag.

The Italiano worked for me in a big way, sporting big flavors that couldn’t stay contained. In addition to the toppings, I added a chive cream sauce that was kindly recommended to me by a fellow Completo obsessed patron. Thank you, kind sir!

With the punch from the chives, all the ingredients came together making me an Italiano Completo fan for life. Plus, at about $2 USD, you can’t go wrong.

4. Restaurante Hansoban – Best Korean BBQ Restaurant In Bellavista

Pork On The Grill At Restaurante Hansoban

I always hunt down a Korean BBQ joint in every city and in Santiago, I found Hansoban, picking them specifically for their pork. Trust me when I say that Pork Jowl is the best cut of meat on the planet. Seriously. It’s like bacon, but way better.

Pork Jowl is the meat taken from the pig’s cheeks. I know some of you might be squeamish about eating cuts of meat from the face, but if I fed you a perfectly charred piece of pork jowl you would instantly cry from pure porky bliss.

The flavor comes from the fat in the pork jowl which stays evenly marbled. NO fatty chunks, but ultra juicy pork meat unlike anything else. Ok, enough of that rant. Just order the pork jowl as I did!

Since one serving of pork jowl wouldn’t be enough, we decided on the pork platter which came with sliced pork belly and sliced pork shoulder.

With a wood fire grill, everything tasted amazing with a nice smokiness that cooking over real wood brings. Fresh meat, hot grill, and delicious Korean banchan. A place of amazing Korean flavors perfect for any hungry traveler.

5. Sanguchería Ciudad Vieja – Best Sandwiches In Bellavista

With all the drinking in Bellavista, any hungry traveler should refuel with robust sandwiches at Sanguchería Ciudad Vieja. My wife and I hit this place up for lunch with a hankering for delicious but unique sandwiches.

My wife ordered the Minero, a grilled steak sandwich with scrambled egg, chorizo, onion, and string potatoes. A delicious sandwich fit for my beef loving wife. Everything felt in sync with the steak playing off the heaviness of the eggs and chorizo with the crispy potatoes adding a civil crunch. A sandwich that satisfied my wife’s deep urge for extreme protein.

I went with the Chanchito Relleno, a roasted pork sandwich with minced blood sausage, sweet potato, special sauce, lettuce, and mayonnaise. Playing an homage to the chicharron sandwiches I ate in Lima, the Chanchito levels up the flavors with a decadent blood sausage, which readers of the blog know is one of my all time favorite foods.

Juicy and decadent, the Chanchito revs up on all cylinders with the roasted pork tasting succulent and tender with a stark contrast from the sweet potatoes and slight spice from the special sauce. Everything I wanted and much, much more.

6. El Palacio De La Chorrillana – Best Restaurant In Bellavista For Late Night Food

Rocuant Chorrillana at El Palacio De La Chorrillana

For a true Chilean classic, every traveler should try La Chorrillana, a dish of french fries loaded with various toppings. I believe El Palacio De La Chorrillana is one of the best restaurants in Bellavista, serving some of the most creative fries in the city, and offering a huge selection of toppings ranging from pork to mozzarella and pepperoni.

For an afternoon snack, my wife and I ordered the Rocuant, french fries topped with strips of steak, and mushrooms with a cream sauce poured all over. These are drunk fries plain and simple.

A deep fried sensation, the fries soaked in the luscious cream sauce making each bite an unctuous affair. The steak and mushrooms were both cooked perfectly, each standing out on its own. The entire dish reminded me of a beef stroganoff but instead of noodles, they use french fries.

I can see this being an amazing late night spot for hungry partiers needing to satiate their appetites before bouncing to another bar. Open until 3 am Thursday through Saturday, those on the party circuit should stop by El Palacio De La Chorrillana to curb that alcohol induced hunger.

7. Momotaro Foods – Best Restaurant In Bellavista For Ramen

Feeling like a true Japanese pub, Momotaro Foods specializes in authentic ramen tasting just like the bowls in Japan. It’s the real deal here, so come hungry and expect a rush of true Japanese flavors.

For a hearty lunch, my wife ordered the Tonkotsu Shoyu Ramen, a dense pork and soy broth with charred sliced pork, spinach, onion, nori, and sesame.

I can’t remember the last time I sipped a rich pork broth like this, with my wife raving about the flavors feeling like we were right back in Tokyo. This level of porky goodness only comes from boiling pork bones for days to achieve a creamy thick broth.

The real treat came from the charred pork belly slices which sparked a primal urge to devour it as quickly as possible. My wife usually gives me these slices of pork when we eat ramen, but she smacked my chopsticks away sucking down the rest of the tender pork.

I went with the Ebi Miso Ramen, a seafood and chicken broth layered with charred pork slices, shrimp, tiny fermented shrimp, veggies, ground beef, shrimp oil, sesame, and chili flakes. With everything in this bowl, somehow everything works.

The shrimp characteristics really come forward but are easily softened with the addition of chicken broth. I really enjoyed the heat combined with bites of beef and pork. A sensational ramen that I would recommend to anyone who loves seafood, earning Momotaro Foods on the list of the best restaurants in Bellavista, Santiago.
