Why Visit Granada?

If your plans allow, fitting Granada into your trip will reward you with delicious tapas and of course epic churros. Getting from Madrid to Granada by train is super easy and only takes a little planning to organize a quick visit to the city.

Granada is the birthplace of Tapas, small dishes served for free when ordering drinks. Yes. Tapas are free, and are an intricate part of the culture in Granada.

For dessert or a snack, visit the churrerías: cafes serving up fried churros. There are plenty of great places for churros, but in this list, I give you the 5 best with different reasons to visit each.

What Are Churros?

Churros are long pieces of fried dough that resemble a donut and accompany a dipping sauce of super dark, thick chocolate. The churro originates with Spanish and Portuguese cuisine but is found all over the world with diverse and unique styles.

In Granada, churros are fried fresh to order and served WITHOUT cinnamon and sugar.

Churros Are Only Available At Certain Times in Granada

People eat churros in Granada around breakfast and as a snack in the later afternoon. Each churro spot has their own schedule but most serve churros from 10am to 2pm and again at 4pm-8pm. Some churros are served in cafes, so although the cafe is open, they won’t serve churros until the designated time.

Order Churros Con Chocolate

When making your order, specify Churros con Chocolate, which comes with a cup of dark chocolate. If you need a little more sweetness, ask for Azúcar (sugar), and the server will provide a large sugar packet to use as you like. The best churros in Granada should always be eaten with a cup of rich chocolate.

5 Best Churros in Granada

Gran Cafe Bib-Rambla – Historic Cafe for Churros

Pl. de Bib-Rambla, 3, 18001 Granada, Spain

Opening in 1907, Gran Cafe Bib-Rambla is one of the oldest cafes in Granada, with a reputation of serving arguably the best churros in Granada. To eat part of the Granada’s history, get there early because tables fill quickly, especially for the afternoon churros around 4pm.

The chocolate here was my favorite out of all five spots on this list. It was the right amount of sweetness and bitterness to the crispy churro. The consistency was slightly thinner than the others giving it time to thicken slightly as it cooled.

La Churrería – My FAVORITE Churros in Granada

Pl. Pescadería, 17, 18001 Granada, Spain

La Churrería is a small operation with only a few tables inside and limited outdoor seating. The owner welcomed me with an enthusiastic grin and found time to say hello, showing his appreciation for my visit despite the onslaught of orders coming in every minute.

These churros contained the right ratio of crispy, sweet, and salty with dark chocolate that clung tightly to the churro when dipped. The shining ingredient is the salt, which gave the churros a slightly more savory demeanor when paired with a bitter sweet chocolate. In my opinion, these were the best churros in Granada.

My front row seats to the action showed the master piping out batter into the oil, manually adjusting the heat and using javelin-sized poles to flip the churros.

In broken English, he tried to carry a short conversation with me, an effort I especially appreciated. I came for the churros but will return for the service.

Cafetería Alhambra – Best For Large Groups In Granada

Pl. de Bib-Rambla, 27, 18001 Granada, Spain

A line stretched around the building for those wanting to try the churros at Cafetería Alhambra. With copious seating available, I saw groups of 12 sitting together ordering mountains of fried churros and enough chocolate to cause a proper heart attack.

These churros were the lightest and fluffiest of the bunch. The chocolate was thinner and sweeter close to the consistency of hot cocoa. Not a bad thing, just different. When dipped in chocolate, the churro soaked up the liquid and softened like dipping a cookie into milk. Despite a soggier result, the churro maintained a decent crunch.

Café Fútbol – Quiet Cafe With No Churro Line

Pl. de Mariana Pineda, 6, 18009 Granada, Spain

If you are frustrated with some long lines or want out of the main downtown area, take a short walk to Cafe Futbol, a locals’ loved cafe with plenty of churros to share. From my experience walking by the place, I never saw a line and everyone seemed happy to enjoy themselves.

I thought their churros were excellently prepared with the right consistency and crunch. The dark chocolate mimicked more of steaming hot pudding, with large thick walls forming around the dipped churros. Decadent and satisfying to say the least. If you want to skip the crowds, visit Cafe Futbol.

Churreria Gongora – Thinner, Crispy Churros

C. Poeta Manuel de Góngora, 2, 18006 Granada, Spain

With a more recognizable appearance, Churreria Gongora makes churros that Americans come to understand. Thin, crispy with long ridges, these churros satisfy with a resounding crunch with chocolate nestled between crispy edges. Located in the southern part of Granada over the Genil, these churros are worth the walk.

I went on a weekday morning and still found a decent line waiting not only for churros but other cafe and breakfast favorites. The churros, to my surprise, were fried in a little shack right outside the main restaurant. Instead of waiting for the table, I found some standing counter space along the shack to gorge myself on churros. Delightful, sweet and crispy, these churros started my day off perfectly.

BONUS Dessert! La Torta – Super Rich Cheesecake in Granada

Pl. Pescadería, 7, 18001 Granada, Spain

If you read this far, then CONGRATULATIONS on finding the bonus dessert! A cheesecake spot called La Torta located right next to La Churrería mentioned earlier serves one of the best cheesecakes I’ve tried anywhere.

The cheesecake was light and fluffy in texture with the cake melting in my mouth the second it touched my tongue. A richness enhanced the filling with a recognizable egginess that I loved. Buy it by the slice or a whole cheesecake to fit your hunger.

Conclusion

Churros are more than just a dessert food, it’s a culturally significant staple in Granada. With these five churrerias located throughout the city, any traveler will have no problem sampling a few spots during their stay. No matter the time of year or time of day, eating the best churros in Granada is the perfect snack to taste the culture in Spain.
